NOTE -- This was written in May of 1997 at the height of controversy over a TV Sitcom
actress "Coming Out" in real life and on her Sitcom. It was a stunt that did not
save the Sitcom from being canceled due to bad ratings.
With all the news about Ellen Degeneres "coming out" there has been a lot
said by Christians about Homosexuals and by the Gay and Lesbian Community about
Christians. Both groups have made it pretty clear that they see themselves in direct
opposition.
Let's check out two very interesting passages of scripture. Both are found in Epistles to
early churches. The first leaves little doubt why people become homsexuals.
Rom. 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident
to them.
20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and
divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so
that they are without excuse.
21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they
became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,
23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of
corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.
24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their
bodies would be dishonored among them.
25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature
rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the
natural function for that which is unnatural,
27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned
in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in
their own persons the due penalty of their error.
28 And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a
depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper,
29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder,
strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips,
30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient
to parents,
31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;
32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are
worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who
practice them.
1 Cor. 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do
not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor
homosexuals,
10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit
the kingdom of God.
11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were
justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
If we read the passage in Romans, it is pretty easy to reach the conclusion that
homosexuality is a punishment sent by God to people who worship themselves instead of Him.
The present day Gay and Lesbian Movement and much of the Pop Culture that controls the
entertainment industry is in direct opposition to God and God's people. This Culture
offers human Idols to worship and admire in place of God. They never miss an opportunity
to endorse any deviant practice, to present it as being natural, and its practitioners as
being brave heros. The storm of endorsements to Ellen from the Pop Culture is a what verse
32 of Romans Chapter 1 means when it says
"they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice
them."
Christians should feel pity for lost souls overcome by seeking their own ways and marked
by God to practice the most degrading of all human behavior.
All to often, Christian people react to homosexuals as Natural rather than Spirtual
people. The Natural Man sees un-natural behavior and instinctivly trys to eliminate it.
Like a mother animal who senses an ofspring with a defect and sets it out to die, the
Natural Man reacts as nature has programed him.
Some Christians feel they can take it a step farther than an ordianry man because they can
not only persecute homosexuals now, they can feel confident that homosexuals are ranked
with the worst of mankind who will not "inherit the kingdom of God" (1Cor.
6:9-10.) If the scripture stopped there they might be justified. But, it didn't. Verse 11
comes back with the reminder "Such were some of you"
1 Cor. 6:11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
That's right, some of the Christians in Corinth had been homosexuals when the Gospel of
Jesus Christ reached them and turned them from human idolatry back to God. Moreover, to
God, the other sins listed in verses are no different from homosexuality. Jesus made that
point strongly when he taught. (
So, consider these things as you relate to homosexuals. They have a certain advantage
because God has made it clear that they are some of those Lost Sheep that we are supposed
to be saving. Some of them have a better chance of admitting their error and turning away
from it than some of us do.
And then there are those who encourage rebellion against God in hopes of making a profit
...
What kind of a hard and evil heart could do such a thing?
